Mountain Travel and Rescue

MTR 1 Class: November 21 & 22, 2026, Pats Peak, Henniker, NH

EMARI and NH Regions Ski Patrol are offering an MTR 1 class.

Are you a ski patroller, outdoor enthusiast, or search and rescue (SAR) team member eager to enhance your survival and navigation skills in the backcountry? Or perhaps you're a weekend adventurer seeking the know-how to explore the outdoors safely and comfortably? If so, this course is designed to prepare you for your next wintertime adventure. This course fulfills an NSP Senior Elective requirement.

This course includes several online evening video sessions, to be scheduled. It also includes camping out Saturday night, November 21st, and outdoor field skills sessions on Saturday and Sunday, November 21st and 22nd.

Our course will be held at Pats Peak, 34 Craney Pond Rd, Henniker, NH. Field skill-building sessions begin at 9 AM on Saturday (8 AM registration) and continue through to about 3 PM on Sunday. The overnight camping element means the course runs straight through to Sunday afternoon. An online learning session using one of the NSP Learning systems will cover the details as students prepare and plan for this MTR excursion.

A few of the topics will include:

• Map and compass navigation, GPS basics

• Wilderness travel

• Search and rescue

• Mountain Travel and Rescue equipment

• Low angle rope rescue

• Shelters

Your instructors will include EMARI and NH Region NSP Mountain Travel and Rescue Instructors and Candidate Instructors.

As part of the class, students must complete all of the required online work before arriving at the campout. Students should be prepared for all weather conditions throughout the weekend. Activities will include hiking, spending one night camping outdoors, and preparing their own outdoor meals.

The NSP Mountain Travel and Rescue (MTR) and Avalanche Programs enhance the student's ability to travel and work safely in the outdoor environment to provide assistance and/or leadership in search and rescue situations.

The progressive range of courses builds the student’s knowledge and skills to travel and work in measured safety in an outdoor environment and avalanche terrain. Field practice includes avalanche beacon use, avalanche forecasting, avalanche rescue, low angle rescue, basic navigation, Winter travel, emergency survival, and an introduction to search and rescue.
